  1. Being, Seeing, and Touching: Machiavelli's Modification of Platonic Epistemology.Jr: Kenneth C. Blanchard - 1996 - Review of Metaphysics 49 (3):577-608.
Both the Athenian wrestler and the Florentine clerk, it turns out, demonstrate a persistent concern with the moral problematic--that is, the tendency of human beings to do what they want to do at the cost of that which they ought to do. Both thinkers see man's vulnerability to fortune as a symptom of this tendency, and they agree as to its ultimate cause: the inability of men to accurately weigh that which is present here and now against that which is (...)

  13. Conceptualizing Religion and Spirituality: Points of Commonality, Points of Departure.Peter C. Hill, Kenneth Ii Pargament, Ralph W. Hood, Michael E. McCullough, Jr, James P. Swyers, David B. Larson & Brian J. Zinnbauer - 2000 - Journal for the Theory of Social Behaviour 30 (1):51-77.
Psychologists' emerging interest in spirituality and religion as well as the relevance of each phenomenon to issues of psychological importance requires an understanding of the fundamental characteristics of each construct. On the basis of both historical considerations and a limited but growing empirical literature, we caution against viewing spirituality and religiousness as incompatible and suggest that the common tendency to polarize the terms simply as individual vs. institutional or ′good′ vs. ′bad′ is not fruitful for future research. Also cautioning against (...)

Capitalism, the American Empire, and Neoliberal Globalization: Themes and Annotations From Selected Works of E. San Juan, Jr.Kenneth E. Bauzon - 2019 - Springer Singapore.
This book looks at facets in the history of capitalism from the Enlightenment period, through the emergence of the American Empire in the Pacific, and to the contemporary era of neoliberal globalization. This re-telling of history is done by drawing from the works of E. San Juan, Jr., considered arguably one of the great contemporary cultural and literary critics of our time. In this author's view, San Juan's lifetime of works offer a living documentation of, among others, the history and (...)

  30. The Dopamine Hypothesis of Schizophrenia: An Historical and Philosophical Analysis.Kenneth S. Kendler & Kenneth F. Schaffner - 2011 - Philosophy, Psychiatry, and Psychology 18 (1):41-63.
This essay selectively reviews, from an historical and philosophical perspective, the dopamine (DA) hypothesis of schizophrenia (DHS; Table 1 lists the abbreviations used in this essay). Our goal is not to adjudicate the validity of the theory—although we arrive at a generally skeptical conclusion—but to focus on the process whereby the DHS has evolved over time and been evaluated. Since its inception, the DHS has been the most prominent etiologic theory in psychiatry and is still referred to widely in current (...)

Epistemology, Communities and Experts: A Response to Goodwin Liu.Kenneth A. Richman - 1996 - Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning 3 (1):5-12.
This paper responds to Goodwin Liu's argument in Volume II of this Journal that a pedagogy must be supported by an appropriate theory of knowledge, and that the epistemology which best supports the service-learning pedagogy is anti-foundational pragmatism. The author shows that Liu's characterization of the pragmatist model of knowledge does not avoid the dualism which he sees as a fault of the traditional epistemology. After suggesting a remedy to this, the author then extends Liu's argument by indicating the limits (...)

Gödel's theorem seems to me to prove that Mechanism is false, that is, that minds cannot be explained as machines. So also has it seemed to many other people: almost every mathematical logician I have put the matter to has confessed to similar thoughts, but has felt reluctant to commit himself definitely until he could see the whole argument set out, with all objections fully stated and properly met.1 This I attempt to do.
